So I've gotten into collecting 1/64 scale diescast in a small way. Just the Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars that I really like. Lots of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and assorted sports cars mostly. But recently I've been seeing beautiful models from a company in Japan called Kyosho. They're 1/64 scale like Hot Wheels, but so much more detailed and realistic. I've been looking at them on ebay, as they are only sold in a certain chain of store (gas station, I think) in Japan! So they can be difficult to come by.
I found a seller with a white Ferrari F40 GTE model for sale recently, and as the F40 is one of my favorites I decided to snatch it up. I couldn't be happier that I did! It's a gorgeous model.
I knew that I wanted to paint the wheels. The bright silver five-spokes didn't look good on the white car, so I planned on doing them black. When I received the car I disassembled it and started looking at that great interior; a single race seat, fire extinguisher, and that monster engine. I've never seen a review that mentions this part though: the rear axle is just slightly wider than the front, and the rear tires are thicker and wider! The realism is crazy, but that's why I love it.
It was all solid black so I painted the engine, extinguisher, and seatbelts just to give it a little more realism. Since the windows on this model are nice and clear, the added color really makes the model come alive. I also chose more of a gunmetal finish for the wheels instead of a solid black. I'm really pleased with how it turned out!

totally custom Hot Wheels Pagani Huayra . This thing was lime green when I bought it, so I stripped the paint, sprayed it white, the hand-painted the black roof, black lower sides, black headlight and taillight surrounds, vents, and all the lights. The hardest part of this custom (especially since it's only my third one) is that I added the side mirrors. I drilled tiny holes in the body to place the two stalks through. They're just little bits of plastic rod and the mirrors are made of a dab of hardened glue. I didn't end up with as precise a shape as I'd like, but at this scale it's hard to really notice. I need to clear coat it yet, then reassemble it. It was just loosely assembled for these pictures.
